RoboRick's News

Tonight was a relatively quick day, in fact I almost didn't stream, but when the ultra talented "TheRealCornelius" hooks you up with some awesome new spaceships... then you best add them in to the game  and that is what I did today... There was no new development, just some me inserting the following assets:

6004344_150995473281_Greggles_Jet.png6004344_150995476671_Danoba_Jet2.png6004344_150995484941_HellaNinja_Jet.png6004344_150995487422_JustinFYI_Jet.png6004344_150995494883_Mia_Jet.png6004344_150995497233_Tucker_Jet.png6004344_150995503493_MarisLyn_Jet.png6004344_150995510883_Aki_Jet.png

New Assets Introduces a new list of bugs and tomorrow is going to be a bug cleaning day for the stream, I am going to be working on:

  • A Collision Defect with the shield and power-ups.
  • Photon Placement on the game map
  • A Fix for Motion (It is about damn time) - Both Enemies and Users
  • Implement the AI Characters (who will fight with the players squadron).

Below is a stream of me implementing the assets and I'll be streaming again tomorrow at 5am.

The First Level Gameplay is making some amazing progress, though I don't feel that we have passed 80% yet, I am starting to see the vision come to life and it is an amazing thing to see. Today, was the first time that I was able to play through the game from beginning to end (and have a somewhat fun experience in the process). I managed to accomplish the following tasks:

  • Fixed the "Knock Back Issue" with Mini Bosses
  • Added the Level One Final Boss
  • Fixed the Enemy Generator (To go through the entire level)
  • Added the Aki Asset (Image Below)
  • Added Power-Ups (Shield Up, Extra Gun, Health Up)

TheRealCornelius hooked me up with some Amazing Fighter Jet Artwork for the Aki and Danoba Characters! (You'll come to meet them soon) Check it out:

6004344_150977311613_Aki.png6004344_150977315041_Danoba_Jet.png

Tomorrow at 5am, I am going to be working on the Following Issues:

  • Smoother Movement (No More Pushing It to the Side, I have to get it done)
  • Slow Down the Movement Speed
  • AI Characters (These are the Second and Third Characters who will accompany the Main Player)
  • (If they are complete) apply the new Assets for Bombs.
  • (If we get the gameplay to a Satisfactory Level for Level One), build the completion screen.

Considering the fact that this is me accomplishing a lifetime dream of building a game (well... an arguably good game), I've been enjoying every second of this experience, even if it does come with a fair share of ass whoopins :D

Check out today's development below:

I am calling this Day 4.1, since tonight at 6pm, I will be streaming again until Midnight. To keep this short and sweet, I figured that I would give a list of accomplishments, failures, and what is to come.

Things I Accomplished

  • Implemented the Shield For Level One
  • Implemented Mini-Bosses

In terms of failure, I ran into a snafu with "Knock Back" for the Mini-Boss. For defending the earth against standard missiles, they simply blow up on collision. However, with Mini-Bosses, I want to make is so that everytime the player hits them, it knocks them back, and removes some of their HP... I'm noticing some conflicting scripts stopping the "Knock Back" from happening, I thought of a solution that I am going to be excited to try tonight :)

Since I am giving myself a 6 hour chunk of time, I'm going to try to get the following items accomplished tonight, to make for a better game:

  • Fix "Knock Back" On Mini-Bosses
  • Implement the Level Final Boss
  • Fix the Enemy Generator (To make the flow of the level go better)
  • Implement the AI Characters
  • Add Power-Ups

Though I am not hopeful in completing the first level tonight, I am stoked to see this game come to life in front of me! If you missed this mornings stream, you can catch it below:

So, tonight I accomplished a few items and then had a revelation on some changes to the overall gameplay. For the first level (which is going to be the vertical shooter level), The Players can Die/Lose by either:

  • Losing All of Their Health
  • Allowing too many missiles to Hit The Earth

I implemented those rules within the confines of the Scoreboard (on the level today) and I think it will add an extra layer of difficulty to the game, but also give the user a choice... "Do I take the hit or does the planet take the hit?"

Things I accomplished today:

  • I implemented Collsion
  • I implemented Enemies
  • I implemented the Concept of HP for Earth and User.
  • I implemented a Panel to Display the User's Health as well as the Planets Health

In addition to that, TheRealCornelius provided a dope sketch of what what the planes are going to look like in Level One and I was thoroughly impressed! Take a look for yourselves (I am super freaking pumped!):

Tomorrow (at 5am until 9am PST) I am going to be working on the following issues:

  • Making Movement Smoother
  • Spawning the Mini-Bosses and Final Bosses
  • Introducing the Concept of "The Shield"

In the World of Jiu-Jitsu there is a saying, "You're either winning or you're learning" and today I did a little bit of winning, and A LOT OF LEARNING :D

To recap, I am developing a game from scratch on my Twitch Stream, it is a Three Level Shooter (with a story mode that I fancy as pretty funny). Though it is simple in nature, I am developing it in a Language that I have never used before (C#), though it strikes some similarities to Java and GoLang, it's still a new language. I'm also utilizing Unity, which has a few "Gotchas" of it's own.

List of Accomplishments for Today

  • Mostly Finished the Level One Character Select
  • Figured out how to pass data between scenes
  • Added Movement and Projectiles to the Character

List of things I LEARNED today

  • DestroyImmediate SHOULD NEVER BE USED... EVER!
  • That Canvas has to exist within your Hierarchy and NOT WITHIN an Empty Game Object!

Tomorrow's Tasks

  • Adding Enemies
  • Adding Collision
  • Adding Power-Ups
  • Making Movement Smoother

If you want to watch me hurt (so that you don't have to), check out the video from today:

So I'm finally making a game that, I myself would find enjoyment playing, and what better way to force yourself into venturing outside of your comfort zone then to learn C#/Unity, while the entire Web of Internet watches :) Last night, I did a Twitch Stream, where I wrote a very rough script for my 2D Shooter game that I will be developing over the coming nights. I let the crowd throw in their input and anytime I used someone's idea, I decided to add their name as a Writer :)  Since, my Twitch Channel has the coolest mods ever, I decided to make them playable characters... and I decided to make myself.... PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES :)  How else would I be able to get them secret weapons from Area 51? You can see the Writing Session below.

This morning, I started to get the user through the flow of going through the Main Menu, Story Scenes, and Character Selection Portion. To make this game a little more challenging to design, I have decided to make it so that for each level:

  • A Player Chooses the Primary Character (that they will control)
  • While also choosing Two NPC's to fight along with them (think Kingdom Hearts)

I only had 2 hours for the stream this morning... and ran into a snafu... That snafu being that NONE OF THE UI BUTTONS were clickable... After the Stream, I fixed this by placing the Canvas Object in the actual Hierarchy as opposed to an Empty Object (I'm going through this pain... So you won't have to).

If you find value from watching me develop games live, then please toss my Twitch Account a Follow and if you are an Artist or a Musician that wants to get your Art and/or Music featured in the game. Please DM Me :D

I do a daily stream on twitch (for those of you who don't know) and today I wanted to play the Online Mode of UFC 2... I was randomly qued up for a Welterweight Fight and decided to use CM Punk (the worst fighter in the game), my opponent was GSP (the best 170lb fighter in the game), and I pulled the miracle! Below is the the proof :)

Though, I was visiting family all last week, I still managed to get a lot of code thrown down on the IDE for "Startup Warrior". Some of the features that I have implemented are:

- A DND Type Rolling System (for determining the outcome of events... while keeping the game random/challenging)

- I implemented the Leveling System for all of the in-game player stats (charm, strength, intelligence, finances, luck)

- I built all of the various districts (Financial, Tech, Hipster, Home, Office, Gym) and built out the functionality

This next week, I am going to be building:

- The In-Game Economy

- Company Creation

- The Job/Promotion System

- Starting to write out some of the basic storylines.

I just wanted to keep you guys updated :)  Here is a snapshot of some code so you don't think that I am bullshitting you :)

I have been wanting to make a game for the past 15 years... Honestly, I began my adventures into software development because I had dreams of one day creating a game cool enough to make it onto the NG frontpage. Since my humble beginnings, I have managed to carve out a relatively decent living for myself as a Fullstack Software Engineer...

I have two games that I immediately have the skills to create, one of which will be a story driven sim-game around the world of Tech-Based Startups... I'm going to call it (for the time being) Startup Warrior. Since, I am flying solo on this one, I have decided to make this an HTML5 Game (using AngularJS as my JS Framework of Choice).

To hold myself accountable, I'm going to do a weekly post here on NG. Below is a view of the city map, what do you guys think?
